About Our Worship

God serves us…this is what happens at Christ the King.

Each Sunday morning, God gathers us around His gifts to forgive our sins and strengthen our faith as we live as His children in this life. He has given us a pastor to speak His Word to us (Ephesians 4:11-13, 1 Corinthians 4:1), and through that Word, He reminds us that He sent His Son, Jesus, to redeem us – that is, to buy us back – from sin, death, and hell (Colossians 1:4 ff.).

As we gather, we confess the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. This is God’s own name which He, Himself, places upon us in our baptism (Matthew 28:18-20).

We remember our baptism at the start of each service by gathering in this Name, because in our baptism God, through His Word connected to the water, washed us clean and set us apart as His children (Galatians 3:26-27, Titus 3:5-8). There, in the water of the font, God Himself saves us (1 Peter 3:21) applying to us the forgiveness of sins won by Christ on the cross (Acts 22:16). Through His Word which He attaches to the water of our baptism, God also gives us His Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38-39) who works faith in our hearts to believe and trust in Christ’s work on the cross (Mark 16:16).

That same forgiveness, won for us by Christ’s death on the cross, is applied to us in the words of absolution when, after we confess our sins (1 John 1:8-9) our pastor stands before us obeying Christ’s command to speak to us God’s words of forgiveness. Our pastor does not speak on his own, but he speaks, “in the stead and by the command of our Lord, Jesus Christ” (John 20:19-23). Through the lips of our pastor, Christ Himself tells us, “I forgive you all your sins in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (Luke 10:16).

God continues to speak to us in as He serves us each week when through human lips, His Word is given voice in our Scripture readings and His public spokesman, our pastor, speaks to us the truths of Scripture in the sermon – convicting us of our sin through God’s Word of Law and delivering God’s mercy and grace to us through God’s Gospel promises of forgiveness, life and salvation in Christ (Mark 1:15, Acts 15:7).

In the midst of all of this, we respond to God’s mercy and grace in prayer and thanksgiving for all men (1 Timothy 2:1-4), return to Him a portion of the blessings He has given us so that His Word may continue to be proclaimed among us and throughout the world (1 Corinthians 9:13-14, 1 Corinthians 16:1 ff, 2 Corinthians 8:1 ff.), and we edify and build one another up in the faith as we declare to one another Christ’s saving work for us in psalms, hymns, canticles and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19 ff.).

Each week, we also hear our Lord’s gracious invitation to eat His body and drink His blood and we kneel at His table to receive this special meal which He gives to us in the bread and the wine (Matthew 26:26ff, Mark 14:22 ff, Luke 22:19-20, 1 Corinthians 11:23 ff.).

At the conclusion of each service, we once again have His name placed upon us as we receive the Benediction and hear the Words of God which He spoke to the ancient Israelites through the priests, “The Lord Bless you and Keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace” (Numbers 6:24-26).

In short, each Sunday at Christ the King, God gathers us to do what the church of Christ has always done. We receive His gifts given to us so that we may continue to live as His children here and in eternity. If you are not receiving these gifts, we extend to you God’s invitation to gather with us here where you can join with us to receive all the blessings and gifts that Christ died and rose again to give to us.

God serves us here each Sunday at 8:15 A.M., and 10:45 A.M.. The Divine Service also takes place on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 7:00 P.M..
