Confirmation Classes
Confirmation Instruction at Christ the King is a formal study of the Christian faith for young, baptized believers which enlarges and deepens their spiritual understanding of their baptismal faith in Jesus Christ. Young students generally begin their Confirmation Studies around the 5th or 6th grade year, depending on their spiritual preparedness and maturity and their willingness to commit to this three-year, dedicated study. Students who desire to enter the program should already enter possessing at least a very basic understanding of the salvation story in Christ and possess some familiarity with God’s people of the Old and New Testaments, which they have gained through Bible readings with their parents as young children and through faithful Sunday School attendance. Students may enter the program when their parents believe they are able to dedicate themselves to this study and accomplish the work.
The program is a three-year program of study, divided into three levels. Classes begin in January each year the Tuesday after New Year’s Day, running from January until the end of May. The students have June, July and August off, and return to finish work in their current level in September and October, when the classes end. After successful completion of course work, each student advances to the next level, beginning studies again in January. Level I is taught by Mrs. Jan Ropes, and introduces our students to Church History, Lutheran Church History, Bible History, and memorization of spiritual basics like the Books of the Bible, the 10 Commandments, etc.
- Level I is taught Tuesday evenings at 6:30 PM.
- Level II is taught by Pastor Boelter and begins formal instruction in the 6 Chief Teachings of the Scriptures, as outlined in a study of those teachings in Luther’s Small Catechism. Level II includes a formal study of the 10 Commandments, The Bible including Law and Gospel, The Apostles’ Creed (Creation, Redemption and Sanctification), and Holy Baptism. Level II is taught Tuesday evenings from 5:30-6:15 P.M.
- Level III is also taught by Pastor Boelter, and is the final Level of instruction, preparing the students for The Rite of Confirmation in October and reception of the Lord’s Supper. Level III includes a study of The Lord’s Prayer, The Office of the Keys, The Lord’s Supper, and a unit on Worship. Level III is taught each Tuesday at 6:30 PM.
Students are in need of a good, understandable, legible translation of the Bible (like the New King James Version), a pen, a notebook, a workbook to be purchased for use in Levels II and III, and a copy of Luther’s Small Catechism. Bibles and Catechisms may be purchased from the Lutheran Center Bookstore on 9 Mile Road near Gratiot in Eastpointe.
Because instruction falls so close to Dinnertime, families take turns sharing their blessings and provide a lite pizza meal each Tuesday from 6:15 to 6:30 for our students. For more details contact the Church Office.
